Italian designer makes inroads in Birmingham
Matteo Perin is an Italian designer who creates custom-made, luxury clothing for international celebrities and business leaders. He has growing ties with Birmingham, including Shaia's of Homewood Inc.
How did you first become involved in Birmingham?
I met Ken Shaia – of Shaia’s Homewood – while I was in New York City. He told me all about his store, which really sounded great. So, we decided to do a trunk show last year with my designs, which was a great success. Shaia’s had Dr. James Andrews come in to meet me and get fitted for a few custom pieces. He is now very fond of my designs and owns a few. I was also recently in Birmingham working with a client of mine, John Travolta, who was shooting the movie “Trading Paint.”
What did you think about Birmingham compared to other metro areas you have visited?
I really like the area, mostly because of the people who live there. They are very kind, and very down to earth – and also very curious of a man from Italy with long salt-and-pepper hair who speaks with an accent.
